[Geneva, Nov 29,2023] – Miles2Smile Foundation, a distinguished non-profit organization dedicated to offering relief and rehabilitation to marginalized communities in India, made a resounding impact as it passionately raised its voice for the protection of minority rights during the 16th session of the UN Forum on Minority Issues held on November 29, 2023.
Aasif Mujtaba, the founder and director of Miles2Smile Foundation, passionately articulated the organization’s concerns about the alarming trend of demolishing homes and establishments belonging to Muslims in India. Describing this unsettling phenomenon as “bulldozer justice,” Mujtaba underscored the gravity of the situation and its formidable challenge to inclusion and equality in the world’s largest democracy.
The condemnation of the treatment of Indian Muslims by Hindu Nationalist Leaders, by Human Rights Watch and United Nations Special Rapporteurs was unequivocal, characterizing it as a form of ‘collective punishment.’
This assessment by human rights agencies highlights the perilous situation faced by over 200 million individuals at risk of widespread violence, homelessness, and potential genocide, according to Genocide Watch, coordinating organization of The Alliance Against Genocide (AAG), an international coalition of organizations.
Despite the explicit expression of serious concerns by United Nations special rapporteurs to the Modi government in June 2022, addressing the issue of arbitrary home demolitions disproportionately affecting Muslims, Mujtaba deplored the government’s unfortunate failure to heed these recommendations.
“The Foundation has a wealth of data and evidence concerning gross human rights violation activities, ready for submission to the council or collaboration with human rights organizations interested in addressing the issue,” said Mujtaba.
In addition to its advocacy, Miles2Smile Foundation has been consistently responding to societal adversities since its establishment nearly four years ago. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the foundation played a pivotal role in addressing the oxygen crisis and as well providing medical relief to victims of the Delhi pogrom. Beyond crisis response, the foundation is actively involved in supporting education for children affected by communal violence in India.
One of Miles2Smile Foundation’s groundbreaking initiatives is the ‘Shaagird’ educational sponsorship program, specifically designed for underprivileged children. This program aims to break the cycle of poverty by providing marginalized children with access to quality education, empowering them for a brighter future.
In his concluding remarks, Mujtaba urged the council to condemn these egregious human rights violations and called upon India to initiate a thorough and impartial investigation into the demolition of properties and forced eviction of minorities. He emphasized the pivotal role of cooperation from Indian officials in ensuring a heightened sense of security for both life and property, not only to address human rights concerns but also to lay the groundwork for increased consultation, cooperation, and confidence-building among diverse communities.
