Happiness made its way and laughter echoed in the house of Najis on September 28 as the board of ‘Smile Home’ took its place on the newly constructed walls. The house, which has endured one of the most devastating days after the brutal killing of her husband in the northeast Delhi riots of 2020, now prepares itself for a new beginning and unbridled peace.
Najis’s husband, Jamaluddin, was one of the 53 people who were killed in riots, making her one of the 23 widows the riots left. With her husband’s death, Najis grappled with making ends meet and soon took her hands towards channeling a source of income by starting a charpai weaving business. Suns shone bright rays erupted, but so did the dark clouds. The business which initially bloomed withered soon, making the basic necessities a luxury.
While her sons were studying in the relief school of Miles2Smile—the Sunrise Public School—to make a better future, their present was at stake. And when meals became uncertain, then Najis found herself in the thought of yearning for support. Longing for Jamal Uddin.
On the day of 24th February, 2020, her husband, Jamaluddin, went to attend his niece’s wedding in Farrukhabad, where he was informed about the vandalizing and ransacking of his home.
For someone like Jamaluddin, who already hailed from a humble background, a house was not just a happy dwelling but a lifelong earning. On hearing the news, he hurriedly left the wedding and made his way towards home on 27th February.
However, what Jamaluddin encountered eclipsed the happiness of his entire family. He was beaten mercilessly by rioters. His body lay in blood on the road, but the blows kept coming from all sides. Five days later, Jamaludding succumbed to injuries, leaving behind four sons and Najis.
While longing for her husband, she thought of building the upper floor of her house and renting it out. She saved money, penny by penny, day by day, and collected enough to start the work.
“I thought that once I started the work, I would gradually get it completed little by little,” she said.
Najis kept the money safe and climbed up to clean the vacant area, but life took a drastic turn, and she fell down, breaking her hand and injuring her feet. The savings to start the work went into the doctor’s bill, and Najis was once again left to battle with uncertainty.
She shared her ordeal with Miles2smile and found hope again. We promised to help her complete the construction. The work began, and in a short span of time her house was ready to be rented.
Today, when she looks at the house, her heart feels the warmth, and certainty takes it away in.
“If I had done it myself, it would have taken me a long time, maybe five or six years. But with Miles2Smile’s help, the work was completed so quickly,” Najis said.
